So it’s after Thanksgiving. We Americans did what Americans do. We ate, and ate, and ate some more. Enjoying such things as ham, turkey, roast beast, mashed potatoes with gravy, and finished with confectioners like pie and cake. We then sat in a lethargic heap on the couch, digesting while being entertained with a football game, unless you were at your in-laws house, which was quite conversation which you did not participate. The conversation centered on the latest family gossip, and ended with heated debate about the next four months to four years.
The next day, those not suffering from a binge eating hangover battled life and savings at the local retailer promising incredible sales on the latest this and that for the first four to five hours after opening. The day was sensationalized with the tragic death of some hapless holiday shopper whom has been lulled into a state of spending friezes. This poor person spends aggressively because they have been duped into spending when they should be saving. By saving, I actually mean not spending money, not getting that extra 10% off of whatever gadget or gizmo or thneed (yes I stole that from my favorite author Dr. Susse).
Now comes the next day. Chaos still stands at the edge of a cliff. We are on a stage coach, riding along that cliff on a rough and bumpy trail with blind curve along the entire way as so far as we can see. Currently, our horses are dragging along, without a team master. There is no leader among them, and without the leadership of the team master, they sway to and throw, speed up and speed down, narrowly missing the edge of the cliff from time to time. Occasionally, the security man, with the shotgun tries to get hold of the reigns, without success, trying to will the team this way and that, to spur them on faster… to no avail.
Unfortunately for us, (those inside the stage coach) are urging on a promising new team master. He has thus refused to do anything to stabilize the coach. He sits next to the reigns, telling everyone that he has a plan, picking members to participate in that plan, but has said little to the people in the coach that means anything substantial. Furthermore, the moves he has made, picking the people that lead to this current state of affairs, has not inspired the leaderless coach team, nor those along for the ride.
The next day, it used to mean a time of starting over, a fresh start, renewed. Today, the next day looms over us like a dark cloud of a winter storm, threatening a deep and penetrating cold. The next day, once the epitome of American exceptionalism, an eternal hope that anyone from any background, from any circumstance could and would make their individual dreams come true, according to their intellect, talent, and hard work, now a threat of despair, despotism, tyranny, and socialism / Marxism / communism. In short the total loss of individual freedom.
What can one do to prevent the death of liberty? The only thing that one can do, keep those phone lines hot to the touch. Be in touch with your representatives. Call your senators, and house representative. I know they won’t like it one bit. Remind them that “We the People” are the boss. It is an irritating fact that the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of the United States of America get in the way of total rule of the governed. “We the People” is not just an ideal. “We the People” actually means that the governed determine our own fate.
When the Declaration of Independence was so elegantly written, long standing abuses of government over the governed had been gone unchanged. We stand and the precipice of history. Before us is not only the loss of individual freedom, but those whom are religious, with a resolute belief in the Almighty God, are threatened with persecution. Those that persecute the Godly people refine those people. Either they will be forged as strong steel, able to withstand the bombardment of the persecutors, or they will be brittle, weak and break. As we approach those days, I implore you to study the Declaration of Independence, as you would study for a final exam for a math class. Also study with the same zeal and detail the Constitution of the United States of America. Use the documents to compare any and all ideas, policies, and laws that are handed to us as “solutions” to our problems.
Eventually, I fear that our government will require us to act in ways that contradict those ideas and practices of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America. If that day comes, will you be ready and able to defend the Constitution, a sacred document from great and God fearing me: men that resolved to the loss of their own lives if necessary, to bring freedom and liberty to a new nation.
This past thanksgiving, for what did you give thank? Did you ponder the day that we now know, and how it came to be? Now is the time that we dedicate ourselves to the cause of freedom. Now is the day that we declare liberty. Our own homes should be a source of the education in liberty and freedom: a place where our children are taught the cause and cost of freedom. Our homes should be a place where men like Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Adams, Hancock, and Charles Carroll of Carrollton are common, and we should know whom these me were and what they did.
Are you going to be one of the Army of liberty? If that day should come, I hope that I am.
